He settled on a part of the Thomas2 homestead in Marlborough, where hewas tythingman, 1704; constable, 1714; moderator, 1715, and selectmanin 1719, '22 and '32. He was commonly called the "Indian Warrior." Oneday while chopping in the woods he saw a savage preparing to take aimat him; he seized his own musket, stepped forward in full view,exclaiming as he did so, "Shoot straight, you dog." Both fired at thesame moment, when the Indian dropped his gun, and giving a tremendouswhoop, bounded high into the air and fell dead. His bullet passedclose to the ear of Jonathan, who escaped unhurt.
