Smith Family of New England http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~walkersj/Smith.htm Generation No. 3 3. ROBERT3 SMITH (ROBERT2, EDWARD1) Baptism: April 30, 1626,Kirton, Lincolnshire, England, and died August 30, 1693 in (Rowley)Boxford, Essex Co., Massachusetts. He married MARY FRENCH March 26,1656 in Boxford, Essex Co., Massachusetts, daughter of THOMAS FRENCHand MARY SCUDAMORE. She was born March 22, 1633/34 in of Ipswich,Essex Co., Massachusetts (or b. 3/2 at Boston?), and died 1719. 1638; Came over from England. Apprentice to Mr. Whittingham? For atime at Boston, then in Ipswich, and next to the part of Rowley thatbecame Boxford. Sold for 15 - 16 pounds to John Tuttle of Ipswich,MA. (Arthur Neale family pages; George Towne book) 1661; Living in the part of Rowley that later became Boxford.Probably the Robert Smith of Ipswich whose daughter Mary was b. inthat town 10/28/1658. His name appears infrequently in town records.(George Towne book) 1673; One of six petitioners to the General Court praying thatefforts of certain persons who were endeavoring to "free us fromTopsfield and lay us to Rowley" be frustrated. (George Towne book) 1678; Took oath of allegiance. (George Towne book) 1680; On records at Rowley as the head of a family. Owned 208 acres.(George Towne book) "Robert Smith arrived in Boston in 1638, just months after AnneHutchinson's banishment to Rhode Island. Only twelve years old,Robert had had no mature encounter with Laudian persecution or EnglishPuritanism. Without a family other than a brother, who soondisappeared, his early exposure to Puritanism in New England camethrough the filter of either indentured servitude or anapprenticeship. After working as a tailor in Boston for some years,he married Mary French of Ipswich in the mid 1650's and establishedhimself in Boxford in 1661. Mary was a member of the Topsfield churchby 1684, but Robert Smith never joined the church. By 1693, when hehad his will drawn up as he lay dying, Robert Smith enjoyedsubstantial yeoman circumstances, leaving three hundred acres to threeof his sons. His son Samuel, Joseph, Smith's great-great grandfather, would move to neighboring Topsfield in 1693, where the family wouldremain for almost a century, before emigrating during therevolutionary years to New Hampshire and Vermont, and after the ColdSummer of 1816 to Palmyra in the Burned-over District of central NewYork. Two episodes dramatically set off the story of the Smiths in Essex Co.In the spring of 1692, at the height of the Salem witchcraft trials,Samuel Smith testified to the occult powers of his aunt by marriage,Mary Easty, one of the three daughters of William Towne of Topsfieldwho were accused of witchcraft in 1692. On the evidence of SamuelSmith, Margaret Reddington, and several of the "afflicted girls", MaryTowne Easty was hanged on 9/22/1692. A century later in 1796,Samuel's grandson Asael Smith wrote a warm and friendly letter fromTunbridge, Vermont to Jacob Towne, Jr. in Topsfield, agreat-great-great nephew of Mary Easty, thanking him "with joy andgratitude" for a recent letter and sending his regards to Jacob'sparents. A long saga of community turmoil and reconciliation stoodbetween these two events. The Smiths and the Townes had been on very intimate terms during the1680's. Though the Smiths lived in Boxford, miles from the Townes insouth Topsfield, all three marriages among Robert Smith's children inthe 1680's were with members of the Towne family. But these cordialrelations were shattered in 1692 when Samuel Smith of Boxford appearedat the Salem court and testified at the trial of Mary Easty, the auntof three of his brothers in law. One night five years previouslySmith had been "to Rude in discorse" at the Easty house, probably atthe wedding supper for his sister Amy, and Mary Easty had warned himhe "might Rue it hereafter". Riding past a stone wall later thatnight he had "Received a little blow to my shoulder with I know notwhat and the stone wall rattled very much which affrighted me my horsewas also affrighted vry much but I cannot give the reson of it."...It goes on to discuss a rift in the Towne - Smith relationships afterthis and then "..."A family of artisans, the Smiths were exposed tothe language and culture of the metallurgical tradition in theirconnections with these ironworking families (The Goulds)...In thedecades following the Great Awakening, the Smiths would turn back tothe network of the Towne family...the younger Smiths began toassociate with families within the Towne orbit. Two marriages betweenSmiths and Townes in 1760 mark the end of the feud. The new Smith-Towne relationship seems to have been rooted in bondsforged in service in the provincial troops during the French andIndian War. In 1757 and 1758 Samuel III served as a corporal in acompany at Lake George (NY) that included two brothers of his futurebride. One of these Towne brothers would be killed in action and theother severely wounded in a failed assault on Ticonderoga; he wassaved from scalping only because a friend pulled a felled tree overhim before joining the retreat. Corporal Samuel Smith III married thewounded man's sister Rebecca at the close of the war in 1760. The newSmith -Towne friendship may explain how Samuel's brother Asael learnedthe cooper's trade. Of the nine coopers in Topsfield known to haveworked before Asael, eight were Townes or from families associatedwith the Townes... Most importantly, their new relationship with the Townes again broughtthe Smiths into contact with the metallurgical tradition. Severalfamilies among the Towne connection owned and worked a mine of copperbearing ore in south Topsfield, and here another connection withalchemy and the Renaissance occult tradition can be established... Both Asael Smith and his son Joseph, the father of Joseph the prophet, would have spent their formative years under the spell cast by thesecopper lands. Even if Asael had not learned coopering among the Towneorbit households of south Topsfield in the 1760's, he would have heardsomething of what was described in 1771 as "a certain shaft or MineHole which is commonly know by the name of Towne's Copper Mine".Asael's son Joseph, with his sons would make his living a half centurylater digging wells; the Smith family knowledge of undergroundworkings may well have begun at this "Mine Hole" in south Topsfield"(From The Refiner's Fire The Making of Mormon Cosmology, 1644 - 1844,by John L. Brooke) He died intestate - 10/3/1698 son Samuel made administrator.Inventory 189 pounds (George Towne Genealogy; History of Boxford)1638; 1680; On records at Rowley as the head of a family.
