She was one of fourteen children of that family. She married Abraham Howe of Marlborough, Ma. May 6, 1657. She d Nov 3,1717 aged 78 and he d June 30, 1695 both in Marlborough. They settlednear Number 2 school house in Marlborough, Ma. which was located nearthe South Meeting House on what is now known as Pleasant St. They hadeleven children there. Her father,William Ward Sr, built a house prior to 1670 near where isnow the Soldiers Monument on West Main St in Marlborough. He was thefirst Deacon of the first Religious society organized here with about225 people by the year 1675. His son Samuel had the house when it wasdesignated as Garrison No 15. It was this place that about 25 peoplefled to when the first church was burned down by Indians in 1676.William had a grandson named Artemus Ward who was the first Commanderin Chief of all forces raised by the Colony and had charge of thetroops in Cambridge till he was superseded by General GeorgeWashington. Elizabeth Ward, Hannah's mother, is buried at the Springhill BurialGround on Spring Hill Ave. in Marlborough. He husband, William has amemorial there also, however he may be buried in Shrewsbury where hehad removed to or in Sudbury where he had come from. The William Ward house was was burned twice by raiding Indians andeach time was rebuilt until it became a large gable ended two storyColonial, with a center chimney and entrance with single lightsurrounds. It eventually passed on to the hands of Bonney Hayden, forwhich the street it is on is named "Hayden St.". The only thing the remains of the Wards is a park in Marlborough aptlynamed "Ward Park" dedicated to Artemus Ward. My sources.. BY JAMES SAVAGE, published 1860 (partsare questionable/BW) The below is information from various records Abraham Howe, was inMarlborough as early as 1657 as records show. In 1660 he shows asbeing one of the proprietors of the town. He probably came fromRoxbury, Masachusetts. He may have removed to Watertown whendifficulty with Indians arose, for his second and third child arerecorded as being born in Watertown. His house was located near wherethe schoolhouse number two was located (see 1803 map). Abraham Howe House one of the most beautifully located in Marlborough. It was in 1660 when Abraham Howe who was settled in Watertown moved toMarlborough where he established the Howe Tavern. He married HannahWard, daughter of William and they had eleven children among whom wasAbraham Jr. who married 1695, Mary Howe, and who with Col. ThomasHowe, the Miles Standish of Marlborough at that time when the Indiansburned our Meeting house and so much property, marched in 1704 to theLancaster Relief where Abraham was killed with Benjemin Hutchins atthe time of that engagement. His brother Joseph Howe, who married in1688 Dorothy Martin, became a large land holder in Marlborough andother places, and owned the grist mill in Feltonville before 1700,probably the first mill erected there. Among their children was Joseph 2nd who married Zeruiah Howe, daughterof Capt. Daniel and Elizabeth (Kerley) Howe, and at her death marriedRuth Brigham, daughter of Jonathan and Mary Brigham. It was Joseph 2ndwho built the above house in 1700 which somewhere near 1825 wasenlarged and again remodeled in 1895. A skin parchment deed signed byGreat James and John Woomscon, Indian Chiefs, is the only recordeddeed of the home place. Among Joseph's children was Thaddeus who married Levinah Brigham, daughter of Joseph and Comfort [Bigelow] Brigham. [At her death hemarried Prudence Holman of Bolton.] Among his children was WilliamHowe who married Elizabeth, daughter of John and Grace (Newton) Stowe.Their son Willliam Loring Howe married Persis Sawyer of Berlin. Theywere the parents of William Nelson Howe, a pleasant old gentleman whosmilingly exclaimed, "They didn't put my name down in the book published 50 years ago(referring to Hudson's book)" And then he told stories of the days ofthe old Indians when his Farm no doubt was one of their burial placesas his father, William. L., who owned a considerable portion of theirPlanting Field had found quantities of beads and arrow heads which nodoubt had been buried with these dusky natives. William Nelson Howe married 1850 Abbie D. Witt, daughter of DwightWitt and Abigail Estabrook Witt. At her death he married ElizabethWilkins daughter of Stephen and Relief Whitcomb Wilkins, and here onthis old Homestead was his life peacefully lived and ended. His bodyrests in Rock Lawn Cemetery where his parents were buried. His son,our respected townsman Elmer D. Howe, succeeded to the estate andstill resides here with his wife Leonora M. [Bemis] and their threechildren, William Llewellyn. [married Esther M. Walker,] Leroy Martin,Elizabeth Lavinia. Source: Ella Bigelows Book Daniel Howe, son of Abraham and Hannah (Ward) Howe, was a large landowner in Marlborough, Lancaster and that part of Marlborough whichbecame Westborough. His property was inventoried at 1,264 pounds andwas administered by his wife. Joseph Howe, son of Abraham and Hannah (Ward) Howe, was also a largeland owner in Marlborough, Lancaster and Watertwon. He owned agristmill at Feltonville, now Hudson, before 1700. His estate wasinventoried at 1,442 pounds. Joseph Howe Jr., son of Joseph and Dorothy (Martin) Howe, was a largeland owner in New Marlborough which is in the Berkshires. His will isdated July 16, 1770 and was proved on March 14, 1775; it mentions hiswife Ruth, sons Joseph, Thaddeus, Phinehas and Artemus, daughtersZerviah, Dina and Betty. It also mentions his grandchildren ofdaughter Dorothy. Joseph Howe III, son of Joseph and Grace (Rice) Howe, bought, in 1777,from Reverand Mr. Smith a negroe servant, whose name was Dill Oxford, for the sum of 66 pounds. The Constitution of 1780 made all suchpersons free. Miss Dill, from choice, remained with the family untilthe day of her death. She was highly esteemed in the family andneighborhood. Her mode of dress was unuseal for the times, she wore askirt and petticoat like a female and a coat after the fashion of aman; this was her normal and holiday appearance. There is no recordher death in the vital records of Marlborough, nor in the inscriptionsof the five cemeteries. Adonijah Howe, son of Abraham and Rachel (Rice) Howe, marched fromPrinceton as lieutenant at the Lexington Alarm in Capt. Boaz Moore'sCompany. He died in Princeton. Samuel Howe, son of Joseph and Grace (Rice) Howe, move to Vermont.Hewas placed on the pension roll of Essex County, Vermont in 1832 forservice as private in the Massachusetts militia. He died in Guildhall,Vermont. Artemas Howe, son of Joseph and Ruth (Brigham) Howe, enlisted 1775 inCaptain Daniel Howe's Company, Colonel Samuel Holden Parsons' 10thregiment. http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~historyofMarlborough/familyabrahmhowe.htm According to Daniel Wait Howe, "Howe Genealogies" (New EnglandHistorical Genealogical Society 1929), "[t]he same difficulty is foundin tracing the ancestry and relationship of this branch of the Howefamily, that is found in endeavoring the trace the origin of someother Howes in this country. "It is not known that this Abraham Howwas related to any of his contemporaries of the name in this country, nor has anything been discovered indicating the name or origin of hisfather. It is not known when nor where he came from to this country;there is a tradition among some of his descendents, that he came fromDevonshire, England. Of this we have no proof. "The first mention ofthis Abraham How in this country, seems to be found on the townrecords of Watertown, Mass., where the marriage of Abraham How toHannah Ward, daughter of William and Elizabeth Ward, occurred 26 March1657. He probably lived there until 1661, when he moved toMarlborough, where his name appeared among the Proprietors ofMarlborough as early as 1660, and he participated in the firstdivision of lands in that town, and there he passed the remainder ofhis life. The only hint that we have ever found, that he had anyrelatives in this country, is in his Will, where he mentions JohnBarns senr. as 'my loving kinsman,' but it gives us no light as towhat degree of kinship it might be. He seems to have been one of theprominent citizens of the town, as in 1694, he kept the Inn at whichthe Commissioners of Massachusetts Colony lodged the first night oftheir journey on their way to treat with the Mohawks. "In 1664, he wasone of the petitioners to the General Court, to appoint a committeewith full power to settle the differences that the town had gotteninto over their internal affairs, and was active in the defense of thetown against the Indians in Oct. 1675. Although Abraham and John Howboth settled in Marlborough, and were near neighbors, they were notrelated to each other so far as is known; there have been manyintermarriages between their descendents, and in this way the twofamilies have become closely allied. Apparently he was a well to docitizen, as is shown by his Will. He died 30 Jan. 1695. His widow died3 Nov. 1717, aged 78 years." ANCESTRY: The LDS Ancestral File indicates that Abraham How's fatheris John Howe, b. 1616 at Hadnell, Shropshire, England, d. 28 May 1680,Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts, and married in 1640 to Mary, b.1618 in England and d. bef. 9 Sep 1698 in Marlborough, Middlesex,Massachusetts. However, this may be doubted as John would have been 16and Mary would have been 14 had Abraham been This is where Art Howe'sdatabase stops. http://members.tripod.com/~arthowe/g0000033.htmlCHILD67176707 914. The Revolution was a struggle for freedom; the contest withPhilip was for existence. The war lasted only about fourteen months;and yet the towns of Brookfield, Lancaster, Marlborough, Medfield,Sudbury, Groton, Deerfield, Hatfield, Hadley, Northfield, Sprigfield,Weymouth, Chelmsford, Andover, Scituate, Bridgewater, Playmouth, andseveral other places were wholly or partially destroyed, and many ofthe inhabitants were massacred or carried into captivity. Martin Howe, son of Eleazer Howe and Caty Barnard. One of the mostbeautiful locations in Marlborough is around Lake Williams, theNorthwest side of which settled in early times Ephraim, Moses, Eli,Martin and Eleazer Howe, as well as those of other well known names.Moses Howe was a man who always made farming pay in legitimateagricultural pursuits, giving close attention to every detail. Both heand his wife, who was a Temple from the east part of the town, workedhard. His oldest daughter married Winthrop Arnold. The picture to the left is known as the Martin Howe house. He left the farm to his son Eli who was a successful farmer. Capt.Eleazer Howe, born 1662, was youngest son of John Howe, and bought in1617 the Thomas Rice place near the northwest corner of the lake.Capt. Eleazer married Hannah Howe, daughter of Abraham and Hannah(Ward) Howe, and it was the first marriage where both parties werenatives of the town. He was a man of property, and the silvermentioned in his will shows that he abounded in an article not commonin his day. In his will he gave several silver spoons to his childrenand a silver tankard to his son Ephraim. They speak of him as a largeland holder and owner of two or more grist and saw mills. He was ahouse carpenter and erected the first school house in Marlborough. From the time he was honored with the command of a Company, he wasknown as Captain. The lake in his day, probably the upper part, wasnamed for him, and was called for more than twenty years after hepassed away "Howe's Pond." He was uncle to Moses Howe, and for yearsone barn between the two houses, with a partition to separate, wasused for both farms. Among the children of his large family were Lymanand Martin, who taught school for several winters. This was in oldtimes called "school teacher district."
