DANIEL2 HOWE (Abraham’), is supposed to have been born inWatertown, Mass., about 1658; he married 6 Oct. 1686, ELIZABETHKERLEY, daughter of Capt. Henry and Elizabeth (White) Kerley. Theylived in Marlborough, where he became one of the leading citizens ofthe town. It is related of him, that on the 16th day of August 1707,while at work with Jonathan Wilder, in a meadow in the westerly partof the town, known as Milham, some two miles or more from his home,they were surprised by a party of Indians, (thirteen in number) whotook them captive, and bound them with birch withes. Taking Wilderwith them, they left Howe with one Indian to guard him, while theywent farther on, intending to take Howe with them on their return.Howe managed to work his hands free, and watching his chance, heseized the Indian’s gun, before the savage was aware of what he wasdoing, whereupon the Indian fled. Howe immediately returned to hishome and gave the alarm. The townspeople speedily raised about twentymen, and went in pursuit of the savages. Following their trail, theycaught up with them in that part of Lancaster, now Sterling, where afight ensued, in which several of the Indians were killed. (Wilder thecaptive was killed by the savages as soon as the attack was made;) theremainder of the Indians fled leaving their packs on the ground. Theparty then returned to Marlborough. He was one of the Board ofSelectmen for several years, was a large landholder in the town, anddied 26 April 1718. His widow administered to his estate, which wasinventoried as 1264 pounds sterling. He d. 7 May 1754; she d. i July1755. Previous to her marriage with Col. Ward, she had one daughter byBenjamin Hutchins, who was killed by the Indians 31 July ‘704. Children: I.
