The character of EdmundBatter is described by Bernard Bailyn as "extraordinary in it'sbrutality..." Edmund Bridges sued Batter for defamation of characterfor : "saying that (the said Bridges) was the leader of a factiouscompany in Salem and that it was their design to overthrow all orderand government in the town of Salem, and also for saying that theplaintiff was the caus of all trouble in Salem." Bridges relationsand some others came to his defense. Francis Nurse, a brother in law,and Isaac Cooke, deposed that in a public town meeting in the pastspring, they had heard Batter make these charges. Jacob Towne, anotherbrother in law, and John Hobb, testified that fifteen years earlierwhen Bridges had been a resident and voter in Topsfield, he hadopposed those who did not have the right to vote by law. In otherwords, that Bridges was on the side of law and order. They also saidthat he had taken the required oath of fidelity twelve years earlier.Thomas Preston, a son in law of Rebecca and Francis Nurse andtherefore another relative of Bridges, testified that he had heardBatter say that Edmund Bridges was the ringleader of the opposingcompany. He further deposed that, as he was generally at townmeetings, he had never heard Bridges speak before he asked leave ofthe moderator. Catherine's father John Symonds was born in England about 1615. Hisfirst wife's name was Mary. John married a second time, her name wasElizabeth. John spent much of his time in England going back and forthso very little is known about him. Children of John and Elizabethwere, Catherine (b.1632 Salem) Ruth (b. about 1633: d.May22,1670),James (b.about 1633), Samuel (b. 1637/38 d. Aug 14, 1722Boxford Middleton, Mass.) Catherine married Jacob Towne June 26, 1659 in Salem. Jacob was theson of Joanna Blessing. Jacob's sister Rebecca was tried and hung as awitch in salem.
